A glance of Our Achievements
1. This vidyalaya received from the president of India the coveted 3rd computer Literacy Excellence award for the school during the year 2005 instituted by Govt. of India as the best Govt School.

2.The Vidyalaya has been awarded Amul Vidya Award for best Academic Performance at national Level.
2. Master Sooraj and Kum Vasundara of class XI attended ‘science congress’ at Indian Institute Of Science of Banglore.
3. Master Sooraj of class XI also was selected to attend a 5days programe at IIT Kanpur.
4. A team of this vidyalaya participated at the Regional Cultural Integration Meet at Bagalkot and brought laurels to the institution.
5. This vidyalaya has been a centre for training in Regional Mathematics Olympiad for students of various JNVs of Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahe. Eminent Mathematicians drawn from university of science and Technology, Cochin and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore were among the faculty members. Six students from this centre were selected for National Mathematics Olympiad context.
6. 23 Students were selected to attend National sports and games meet held at Gwalior, Firozpur and Samasthipur.Some of them attended the SGFI meet representing Navodaya vidyalaya Samiti.
7. Rajina of Class XI ,Antocyriac of class VII, Ankita George of class VIII represented the state of Kerala in the National level Handball Meet.
8. ‘KalamKari Painting’ of AndraPradesh ,’Gurubana’ of Punjab, ‘Odissi folk dance’ of Orissa,Kathak by Pathmasree Shovana Narayan were organized in the Vidyalaya in association with Spic Maca, Kerala
10.A computer aided exhibit under the caption ‘Sudoko’was selected at
the National level.
11. Nine distinct programmes were organized under Adolescent Education
Programme under ministry of Health,Govt of India in collaboration with
UNESCO
12.This Vidyalaya has been selected under UK India Educational
Research Initiative programme for a period of 3years from 2008.
13.The football team of the Vidyalaya trained under SAI scheme won the
Trophy in All Kerala CBSE football Championship held at Idukki. Also the same team represented Kerala State NCC Directorate in Subratho Cup at Tripura
14. The band set of the Vidyalaya has made a remarkable impression not only in this district, but also in the JNVs of the Hyderabad region.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya,kasaragod was established in 1986 as per the national Policy on Education.The Vidyalaya functions under Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti,an autonomous organisation under the Department of School Education & Literacy,Ministry of Human Resource Development,Governement of India. The policy visualises the zeroing down of the urban rural disparity in education in the country.Established with lofty objectives this co-educational residential institution cater to the poor,talented rural children serves as the focal point in the district .The institution is provided with all modern facilities including integration of computer technology in education.Location of the InstitutionThe institution is located in the northernmost district of the state of Kerala.caressed by the gentle breeze from the Arabian Sea,the Vidyalaya lies on the national High Way 17 on the Kanhangad-Kasaragod segment.The institution is easily accessible from both Kasaragod(26 km) and Kanhangad(13 km) which are the nearest major railway stations.Land & facilitiesThe sprawling 30 acres of land with rock outcrops and lush green vegitation is an ideal setting for residential education.well protected by boundary walls the campus is safe place for the inmates.
Buildings : The institution has adequate physical facilities.The academic and administrative building is a two story building which houses spacious class rooms,science and computer labs,audiovisual rooms ,museum etc.
Laboratories : The institution has well equipped and meticulously maintained separate laboratories for Biology,Chemistry and Physics.The computer laboratory of the institution is equipped with 50 computers.We have 24 hours internet connectivity.
Museum : The Vidyalaya has established a museum with a large number of artifacts.The items on display in the museum will enable the children to see such antique objects and understand them.

Co-Curricular Activities

During this time when education has become extremely bookish and lopsided neglecting the growth and development of latent talents of the students, we have enthusiastically tried to uphold the spirti of the New Education Policy of the Government of India supplemented by curriculum frame work 2005 which rightly emphasises the importance of integrated education for the harmonious all round development of the child’s personality. We make appropriate and down to earth plan to achieve this target by imparting training for 3H’s viz. Head, Heart and Hand. Besides class room instructions, their mental and intellectual faculties are being sharpened by arranging various competitions through out the academic year at the Intra House and Inter House level.
The Inter-House Competitions are held under Junior and Senior categoris in include all students of the institition.
Some of the items of the competitions are light music, group music, extempore in all the four languages, group discussion, recitation, calligraphy, quiz, monoact, fancy dress, drawing and painting, solo dance, pookkalam, group dance, elocution etc.
The Vidyalaya has been providing training to talented students in classical dance, classical music, instrumental music.
Scouts and Guides, NCC, School band troop are given intense training by specialised personnel from these fields.
The Vidyalaya’s nature club has been rechristened as Souparnika eco club and revitalized its functions under the aegis of the eco club programme, Ministry of Environment and Forest,Govt of India. The club members carried out much conservative activity and participated in nature camps in association with Biosphere, Kasaragod. Children are involved in biodiversity surveys,study of birds and butterflies,identification and preservation of medicinal herbs and awareness campaigns
In the present context of social setup it is highly necessary that children at the tender age should understand and develop the idea of religious harmony and appreciate the secularist concept of Indian democracy. Keeping the idea in mind, the vidyalaya has been celebrating all the religions and national important days. The vidyalaya celebrated independence day, Onam and Gandi jayanthi, Childrens day, Hindi fortnight, Republic day, Ramsan, Holly, Sivarathri, Vishu and Earthday etc.

Kasaragod-Places of Attraction


PLACES OF ATTRACTION
THE BAKEL FORT
This fort of great hisotical importance is about 300 years old. This imposing circular structure of laterite sites rises 130 ft. above sea level and stands on a 35 acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea. The Fort appears to have been built up from the seas since almost three fourth of its exterior is drenched and the waves do stroke the citadel. The fort was built for fulfilling the defence requirements. The holes on the outerwalls are specially designed to defend the fort effectively. The holes at the top are meant for aiming at the farthest points; the holes below are meant for hitting when the enemy is nearer and the holes underneath facilitate attacking when the enemy is very near to the fort. This is a remarkable evidence for the medival technology of defence strategy. Apart from this, the wild and ecstatic beauty of the setting sun is a glorious presence in the fort.
MALIK DINAR MOSQUE
Kasargod acquired considerable importance as a center of Islam.The historic Malik Deenar Juma Masjid built in the typical Kerala style is believed to have been founded by Malik Ibin Dinar.The Juma Masjid, which is one of the best kept and most attractive in the districts is located at Thalankara.
Anandasaram
This internationally renowned spiritual centre founded by Swami Ramdas in 1939, offers a quiet, peaceful ambience best suited for meditation and spiritual studies.Anandasram plays a very important role in value education for children of not only the district but the whole country.
Ananthapura Lake Temple
This 9th century temple is the only lake temple in Kerala and is the moolasthanam(original abode) of Anandapadmanabha, the deity of Sri. Padmanabha Swami Temple,Thiruvananthapuram.
Chandragiri Fort
Situated on the Chandragiri river, southeast of Kasaragod town , this town is known for its large 17th century fort built by Sivappa Naik of Bedanore. The Chandragiri fort, one of a chain of forts built by the same ruler, offers breathtaking view of the meandering Chandragiri river and the Arabian Sea. It is a vantage point to watch the sunset.There is a mosque nearby . The ancient Kizhur state Temple at Chandragiri has an annual festival called Pattu Utsavam

Madhur Temple
A Hindu Pilgrim centre, 8 km from Kasaragod, it is well known for the Srimad Anantheswara Vinayaka Temple or Mahaganapathi Temple. The sacred temple even finds mention in the Sahyadri Centre of Skanda Purana. The sacred thirtham of the temple well is believed to cure all diseases. The imposing structure of Srimad Anantheswara Vinayaka Temple-the rich architecture and copper plate roofing rises majestically against the beautiful landscape on the banks of Madhuvahini
Jain Temples: There are two old Jaina Bastis at Bengara Manjeswar on the southern bank of Manjeswar river.
Churches: About 11 Kms from Kumbla on the Kumbla - Badiadka road is the Mother Dolorus Church of Bela. The hundred year old Roman Catholic Church is built in the Gothic style. The Our Lady of sorrows Church constructed in 1890 is the oldest in the district.The memorial of the late Govinda Pai, the grand patriarch of Kannada literature, is located at Manjeshwaram.

Kasaragod-Enchanting Fairs

BUFFALO RACEBuffalo race forms a part of Tulunadu culture and is prevailing only in Kasaragod District.t. It usually coincides with the starting of agricultural operations in the paddy fields
The race course usually having a length of 500 to 100 feet and a breadth of 20 to 50 feet, formed in to large boroughs in the muddy fields which is known as Kanbalam. There used to be permanent Kanbalas or race course, in prominent places. Races were conducted annually in those places.
The majestic and graceful animals exhibit their brutal strength and speed when aroused by the skillful riders.
COCK-FIGHT
Cock-fight is another rural attraction in Kasargod District. It has got a legendary origin and it is extensively referred in the folk songs of Malabar. Till recently cock-fights formed an inseperable and unavoidable part of temple festivals, especially in the northern parts of Kasargod district. Though it is legally forbidden, cock-fights are conducted secretely and clandestinely in many parts of the district.
In olden days a religious tint is attributed to this sport and that is why even now cock-fight is conducted in the precincts of temples. Special breeds of cocks are grown for the fight. These fighter cocks have great vigour and stamina and they exhibit formidable courage during the fight. A sharp double edged small weapon is tied to one of the legs of the bird. The fighter bird rises high and tries to kick the enemy bird. Usually one of the birds gets fatally wounded and dies. Sometimes the defeated bird runs off from the arena. The owner of the successful cock is entitled to get the defeated or killed cock. If both cocks are killed in the fight the owners used to exchange the dead birds. Largescale betting is also prevelant in many parts.

CulturalHeritageThe legions of arts speaks in volumes the rich cultural heritage of Kasargod regions. The spectacular pageant of Theyyam deities impersonated - raises Kasargod into a land of fabulous fantasies. The symphonic melody created by Yakshgana, Kambala (buffallo race), Cock fight etc. of the Thulanad culture reverberates the atmosphere with awe.Poorakkali, Kolkali, Duff Mutt, Oppana etc. are enchanting performing art forms which are dyed deep into the cultural fabric. Visitors will be enthralled by such art forms.Theyyam The Theyyam or Theyyattam is a popular ritual dance of Kasargode district. As a living cult with century old traditions, rituals and customs, it embraces almost all castes and classes of Hindu religion in this region. The term Theyyam is a corrupt form of daivam or God. It is a rare combination of dance and music and reflects important features of a tribal culture. Theyyams are performed before the local temples dedicates for such deities. The whole community participates in the function believing that propitiating the deity would bring prosperity to them
Yakshagana
Yakshagana is musical dance drama played in the open air.Yakshagana is one of the most important folk theatres of Karnataka and Kasargod which has brought fame to this region. The stories of Yakshagana were drawn from the Ramayana , Mahabharatha , Bhagavatha and from other mythological episodes. The main attraction of yakshagana is stage craft where characters like Gods, Demons and Sanyasis are presented in a supernatural atmosphere and the audience are carried to a world of fantasy.There are about 100 ragas in yakshagana.The yakshagana is a total theatre because it has everything of a performing art. It entertains and enlighten both the learned and the illiterate. Some of the Yakshagana troupes of the district have the heritage of 100 to 150 years
BombeyattaYakshagana is presented through puppets and hence it is known as Yakshagana Bombeyatta.String puppets and rod puppets are dressed with colourful costumes according to the character in the story. Bombeyatta is controlled from a curtain chamber specially put up behind the scene for the purpose. Musical instruments are also used just as that of Yakshagana.
THIDAMBU DANCE
Thidambu dance is a ritual temple art form performed in Kasaragod District. Thidambu is the replica of an idol in a temple which could be taken out of the sanctum sanctorium for certain rituals connected with the poojas/festivals of the temples. It represents the idol of the presiding deity in the sanctum sanctorium. Thidambu dance is performed only in connection with the annual festivals of temples, by the Brahmins.
PoorakkaliThis is an integral part of pooram festival celebrated during the month of Meenam (March-April). Pooram is celebrated to praise and please the god of love named Kamadeva. The song sung by the group leader is repeated by the other artists ,in chorus. This is a dance rhythmically around a sacred lamp with elegant steps. While dancing the players clap their hands uniformly to the tune of the song and according to the Thalam by the group leader. Poorakkali has got 18 different forms. Most often stories from the epic Ramayana constitute the subject matter of the ritual songs.
FESTIVALS
Kasargod is rich in folk-culture, visual arts and festivals. The different religions, groups and communities in their historical evolution have subscribed to the growth of a dream like panorama of folk art and visual art forms in the region.Onam Vishu,deepavali,pooram,makarasankranthi,Ganesh chaturthi are the major festivals of the district.
Makham Uroos of Muslims and Perunnals of Christians are the famous festivals celebrated in much gaity.
Sarvajanika Ganeshotsavam This festival is celebrated during September every year in connection with Ganesh Chathurthi, by the local people under the banner of Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samithi, Kasaragod. A big idol of Lord Ganesha is made with clay and adorned for five or seven days conducting poojas and on the last day the idol is taken with a procession through the town and to immerse in the Temple tank. This festival attracts thousands of devotees. Ganesh Chathurthi day has been declared as public holiday in Kasargod District.
Annual Festival at Anantheswara Temple, ManjeswaramThe annual car festival of the temple is on the Marga Shira month usually between the 3rd week of November and 3rd week of December. It is also called Shashti festival, which attracts thousands of devotees and pilgrims
Madhur Srimad Anantheswara Vinayaka Temple Annual 7 days festival is held during the month of March/April. Special festival Moodappa seva is conducted periodically in view of the huge expenses involved. A large number of devotees attend the festival.
Mallam Durga Parameswari templeThe temple situates near Bovikanam in Muliyar village about 10 kms away from Kasargod. The temple is dedicated to Durga Parameswari. The only one temple from where the devotees get daily annadanam (food). A large number of piligrims visit the temple especially women folk. Tuesday and Friday are very important days in the temple. The annual festival lasts for 7 days, which falls in the month of February-March .
Thalaklayi Subrahmanya Temple, ParavanadukkamSituated about 5 kms away south of Kasargod town,the temple is dedicated to Lord Subramanya. The Shasti festival during the month of December-January every year is famous and attracts large number of devotees.
Kizhur Sri Sastha Temple, ChandragiriThis is an ancient temple situated at Chandragiri which is about 6 kms away from Kasaragod town. This is the head quarters of Anjooru Nayanmars - Troupes of five hundred professional singers sing jointly in praise of the greatness of the diety. This temple has close connections with Trikkannad Siva temple. The dignitaries of all the Kazhakams of Saliyas from Pattuvam to Panamboor (present Manglore) known as Pathinalu Nagaram assemble here annually on the second saturday of November.
Trikkannad Siva TempleThe Siva temple which is a very important Hindu temple known for the rituals performed for the well-being of the souls of the dead is situated on the sea shore Owing to its importance ,this temple is also known as Dakshina Kasi. The one week festival in the temple starts with the Kodiyettam (flag hoisting) during the month of March-April every year. Ashtami Villakku and Pallivetta are associated with the festival. This is the only one temple with face to the west.
Bharani Maholsavam The famous festival of Palkkunnu Palakkunnu Shree Bhagavathy Kshetram temple is Bharani Maholsavam which falls in the month of March every year. Maruputhari festival, during the month of December-January, Kalam Kanippu Maholsavam during the month of January and 'Poorolsavam' of March-April, are the other festivals of the temple. Bharani festival starts, the next day of the Arattu festival of Trikkannad temple. A large number of people from all over the district and other districts and Karnataka state attend the Bharani festival especially to witness the Kazhchas and the fire works display which lasts for hours.
Mannanpurathkavu, NileshwarMannan purath kavu temple is situated at Nileshwar, near the railway gate. This temple is dedicated to 'Durga' where poojas are performed by a sect called Pidarar. Another specialty of this temple is that Kurathi is performed here by sacrificing cocks. A large number of devotees visit this temple on Tuesday and Friday, the important days of the temple. Annual festival in this temple is known as 'Kalasam' which falls during Edavam (May) every year. Theyyam is performed on these festival days.

Climate
As the district has diversity of physical features it has diverse climate.The climate of the district is warm,humid and tropical.The average maximum temperature is 31.2 degree Celcius and the minimum average is 23.6 degrees Celcius.The humidity is very high.It may reach 90 percent during south west monsoon.The district receives an annual rainfall of above 3500 mm.The southwest monsoon begins by the first week of June and fades out by September.The north-east monsoon is during October-November.
LanguagesKasargod is a land of different languages. The languages without script are also used here. Tulu, Kannada, Malayalam, Konkani, Tamil and other local languages are popular.Religions Communal harmony and religious tolerance are the noteworthy characteristics of the people.The Hindus, Muslims,and the Christians, live side by side, each influencing and getting influenced by the culture of the other though they speak different languages

Historical background of Kasaragod District

Historical Sketch of Kasaragod District

Kasaragod is the northeren district of the state of Kerala. Lying alongside the Arabian Sea the district is famous for beautiful landscapes and rare traditions. Kasragod district was organised as a separate district, on 24 May1985.

All along its west it is walled by the Western Ghats while along the east the Arabian Sea borders it. The district covers an area of around 1992 sq km.It has a population (2001 census) of 1,203,342. The literacy rate of the district is 85.17 %.
History
Kasaragod was known by Arabs by the name Harkwillia.[1]Many Arab travellers who visited Kerala between 9th and 14th century visited Kasaragod , which was an important trade centre then.Kasaragod was once a part of the Tuluva kingdom. Vijayanagara empire ruled Kasaragod by defeating the Kolathiri Raja who had Nileshwaram as his capital. At the onset of collapse of the Vijayanagara empire, Vengappa Naik declared indepenance to Ikkery. In 1763, Hyder Ali conquered Bedanoor (Bidnur), the capital of the Ikkery Naiks. Tippu Sultan conquered the area.
